My Sanity

Albert Einstein defined insanity as, “Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”.  Even though we know this to be true, several continue to replay the same insane scenario over and over again.  When will it end?

I believe I have found an answer to that question.  Rather than looking at the, when will the insanity end, I suggest we focus on when sanity can begin.  You can spend several precious moments on worrying about what is wrong.  Or you can spend your moments on falling in to what can go right.

Just like insanity, sanity can also live all around you.  One of the reasons why most have only replayed the insanity version is because, in spite of wanting a different result, we are creatures of habit.  However, if you peel down toward the second level of a habit, you find that our habits can also be re-wired.  How so?  With movement.

You ever wonder where the phrase, “movement is medicine” came from?  What all that information boils down to is that although we are creatures of habit (mentally), our physical body can create the stimulus for our brains to re-wire a new habit.  That ability is something that no pill, machine, or late night infomercial can ever duplicate.  That is our own, and we can either use it or lose it.  So, where do we go from here?

I suggest you first recognize that you may be living in a world of insanity.  Next, you decide if the smile on your face is genuine or not.  Then decide to seek the direction to lead you toward finding your own sanity.  That process takes action.   Your action to continue to see through, what you first envisioned as a new you.    I am not here to give you your way because it is your way.  I am only here to point you in the right direction.

Do you believe in fate?

They say fate  is the supposed force, power, or principle that predetermines events, as well as any inevitable events predestined by this force.  And if you believe in it, it is also said that your course is predetermined.

I am here to say that whether you believe in it or not, there is ‘stuff’ going on around you that may believe in fate.  And the ability to adapt yourself to a little, a lot, or all of this stuff takes a level of fitness you may not currently posses.

Without allowing yourself to fully take or make advantage of everything around you, you limit everything about you.  The key is to prepare you.  I am now telling you that a certain level of strength is required of us everyday.  And, there is another level of strength that is required to live in the unknown, the possibility.  The strength I am speaking of is your ability to seize, to adapt, and to conquer.

This level of strength is what I speak of when I speak of Sanity Strength.  It is the fitness between your mind and body and the strategy of knowing what to do with it.  Let’s call it your ninja skill.   You see we all of have a ninja living within us.  And whether you believe in fate or not, your ninja skill is the ability to be successful in either direction.

What’s your sport?

Me?  I’m just a trainer.

A response I recently heard myself give, and after, angry because of it.   After several years spent perfecting a skill, I still have moments when I belittle the sport I love.  Later, I had myself sit down and rewrite exactly what it is I play out everyday, because if I don’t do my job, my fans can not do theirs.  This was what I came up with,

I have mastered the ability to assist my followers in becoming more:

a. productive and efficient, using a mix of movement patterns and lifestyle adaptations 

b. resilient, using traditional training practices and innovative applications to fit the needs of today’s sports

c. methodical and focused, for  that ‘in the game’ strategy

and d. reflective, to further aid with future strategy and recovery.  AKA, THRIVE.

What all these simply mean is that I always stay ahead of the game, so to better lead the direction for those searching to improve theirs.  My career decision may have been an easy one, still, the work to get there has been exactly opposite.  I practice to consistently hold a focus toward productivity, to not over or under think, and to react accordingly, so to not lose sight of the steps used to move forward.  I may have started in this sport as a fat kid playing with fitness, and now, I am a professional trainer directing the plays that manufacture an opportunity to living inside of extraordinary.

Start ups

Growing up in the Silicon Valley of California means I have lived amongst an abundance of start up companies.  My environment is completely surrounded by the next “thing”.  And as many that have succeeded, simply means that A LOT more have failed.  Still, there are lessons to be learned from each of them.

Ironically , we each are a part of our own start ups.  At any given moment you can decide your next adventurous excursion.  Where do you want to go?  What do you want to do?  So long as the the answers remain a sun rise decision, you always have an opportunity to start.

The skill lies in 3 elements:

1.  Readiness – to wake with the mind and body prepped for the day’s tasks.

2.  Steadiness - to not stray from the day’s tasks

3.  Adaptedness - to possess the ability to reconstruct your tasks to fit the dynamics of  that day.

 

The mastering of these elements is to be amongst the Sanity Valley.  To unquestionably maximize every day you open your eyes to.

Lucky

Winning the lotto?

So simple right?  It can make all of  your dreams come true.

Question, what are your dreams?

Don’t worry, I’ll wait…

…While we wait, I must say that I am lucky.  Why?  Because my dreams were made clear when all around me was not.  I have lived a multitude of bad experiences and still voice, I am lucky.

It is the darkest of days when clarity provides a light because it is the only direction to travel toward.   And just so you know, it will be far away.  That’s the point.  The journey from here to there is YOUR lifetime.  You’re so lucky!  You get to experience things that I don’t.  However, upon time of reflection, we can share our stories together.  So still, I am lucky.

Stress.

I remember one of the first times I became more aware of the word stress. I was in my second year of college and a friend I had met through one of my courses began telling me how depressed he had begun to feel. He was taking a Stress Management course and developed an obsession of how many thingamajigs and thingamabobs there now were to stress about. Things he never even thought about, now began to overwhelm him and he didn’t know where to go or what to do next.

I’m sharing this story with you because it is a real example, that without properly preparing yourself, one simple word (stress), can quickly become bigger than you. Now you ask, “How do I prepare for such a challenge?” You begin it with how you want it to end. Or in other words, you aim your goal toward success. “Is that possible?” And the answer is, “Yes, when you learn how to make what may seem impossible, possible.” And the answer to that is, you begin with I. You make impossible look like ‘I am possible’. Now this is where my S comes into play. You map SANITY and set it in motion.

Sanity is not something we have, it is something we learn to keep. The battle is always on. There are always challenges and distractions that will present themselves to you. It’s about learning how to be comfortable when uncomfortable is convincing you to listen. And because peace begins from within, your answer is to master the equation that will always keep you sane.

The leaders of any industry have also had to follow in one’s footsteps.  There will always be someone just ahead of you to follow.  That is until you have reached the point of full creative ownership, and then there will be several more.  My point is, we all have the potential to be leaders.  And in order to lead, you must also know how to follow.  What do you follow?

A direction –  directions give us points to travel.  They lead us to what we presently desire.

A will – one’s will provides a purpose.  It is the voice within your heart.

A reason – a reason is the point of our existence.  They are written in your DNA and ready for you to play them out.

 

Each day begins with an intent.   It is the icon of START.  We build the rest of our day around the intention we woke up to that morning.  No guarantee for another.  No do over’s in this game.  Take what you have in front of you and make the best YOU you can possibly create.  If your lucky, you can have another shot tomorrow.  Master your present moments and follow the direction your were born to participate within.

A trainer:

We prepare.  A successful session does not just happen, it is planned that way.  We set your scene.  Each session must have a flow and must be organized.  Without properly preparing a session, a client is left with with a mindless arrangement of hoops and ladders with minimal carryover to real life health and fitness.

 

We coach.  The voice of a trainer is one of his or hers strongest assets.  Our voice is what our clients carry with them when they walk away from our session.  This can be a voice full of independency or a voice of co-dependency.  I prefer the former.

 

We lead by example.  We are a model of what is possible for anyone with the mindset, the environment, and the network to both start and finish everyday.  You are only as rich (so to speak) as the environment you surround yourself within.

As most of you already know, I write about maximizing experiences.  To grasp every opportunity present allowing yourself to experience each moment and make it your own.  Is this possible?  I think, yes.

We start by giving us a name, SanityFS athletes.  Our discipline is in the art of MME or Multiple Mixed Experiences.  The name implies that there will be several happenings constantly around you.  The task is to be mindful of them and make them possibilities for you.  But first, beginning with owning one thing each for mind and body.  Your mind must be open and your body must be adaptable.  In other words, remain fluid.

One’s fluidity is the ability to hold a suppleness.  No additional stress, no further tension.  This requires a very different intent to your  daily exercise.  A coach prescribes an exercise for very specific reasons.  The prescription must fit the demand of the goal and be able to adapt to when the goal is asked to change.  In science, we have cycles, in layman’s terms we have short and long term goals.  For me, it is a balance between both, with an emphasis on an ability to change the short term to fit the long term.  That is a SanityFS athlete.  An ability to recognize a distraction and react accordingly, so to allow for forward movement.  The language between the mind and body is always effective and efficient.  Time no longer gets wasted.  It is spent on a maximal return for each investment.

As a coach, I would suggest to recognize that there are, and will be, distractions around you.  Some are necessary and still many are not.  Which one is which is for you to decide.  What was the long term goal?  Are you still heading in that direction.  Recognize that the environment you are within must:

a. reflect you

and b. support the direction you are going

if either of these are missing, we lose efficiency and gain distractions.  Like seeks like, but first be cognizant of what you like, and obviously don’t like.  What are we here to enjoy?  The open road ahead or the madness of would of, could of and should of.

It’s been said a body in motion will stay in motion.  And the most efficient way of for this to happen is to follow the path of least resistance.  However, when the goal is to create a change, then we have a different equation.   One of  going just beyond a tolerable threshold.  Moving in and around an area of uncomfortableness.  Creating a change in the chain of events by having the resilience to take on a challenge and see it through.

I would like to create a different statement.  The path of new resistance.  In the strength and conditioning room that could be as simple as a few kilo’s in the up direction or one to two seconds off your 500 Meter pace.  Just enough stimulus to spark something new, something different, and something to work through.

In real life application the new resistance will come in many different forms.  However, the one constant is you.  Your approach, your intent.  Both can be slightly altered to experience a different chain of events.  You want a new job?  You want to lose 5 lbs?  You want to meet someone special?   Let’s assume you desire a new outcome.  The definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting something different.  You can not begin a new journey and have the same you be that first spark.

A successful plan is one that keeps you moving forward and allowing you the opportunity to see it through.  I suggest a change in the equation.  Envision what would be necessary to have that new job, to lose those 5 lbs, or to find that someone special.  Once you have recognized what is necessary, your positioning is key for success.  Place you in the middle and map your plan around you providing the ability to maneuver and maintain the flexibility to adapt to any distraction that may appear.

The path of new resistance now becomes the path of possibility.  You can open doors you never new existed.  Your what if’s become when’s and you will always find a new you in the end.  Set your sights and just push send.
