Each and every one of my posts are written with the intention to simplify what was once uncomplicated and pure.  In the beginning, the passage of fitness training was gluttony free of silly toys and jumbo sized pieces of equipment.  It was once a simple place, and only your challenging experience awaited to be measured.

Now we are flooded with intentional distractions.  Appliances labeled as fitness tools soak up inches of primary real estate in gyms across the globe in hopes that they can sell you an opportunity to find a new you and a new look.  Which ones work?  Which ones work better?  Which one fits me?  Do I need all of them?  Just a sample of a number of questions that float around the four corners of your gym.   And a long with them, a number of mediocre fitness trainers simply selling a cookie cutter they call fitness.

I am here to tell you that there a lifetime of results existing amongst the most nutritionally fitness dense tools available on the market.   In this case, the biggest rewards do come in the smallest packages.  Below is a list of tools I feel are the most efficient way to spend your time in harnessing your fitness potential.

1.  Body weight

2.  Medicine Ball

3.  Dumbbell

4.  Barbell

5.  Kettlebell

Supplement(s)

6.  Bands

7.  Ropes

8.  Rowing Ergometer

9.  Variable resistance machines

Each allow freedom of movement and room to explore.  Taking your time to master  the skill of maneuvering these simple tools is your license to walk the path of extraordinary.   How does one master something so free?  You learn to flow, and follow the signs.

Which way to go?

I have been working in the fitness business for almost 20 years.  And not only that, I started in this business at the ripe old age of 19.  Prior to that, I had been in the gym since 16, and it was then I knew I wanted to pursue a career in fitness.

These words are very similar to countless numbers of professional trainers and coaches I have read, also describing their passion for the fitness game.  Where do my words weigh in differently?  Directions.

Directions is just another word for choices.  When one is given directions, they are also being given the act of choosing.  They choose which way to go and hope that way will get them to their destination.  A long with having directions comes options.  You can travel the most direct route, the one avoiding one way or another, or the one filled with distractions.

I created a professional career specifically to provide directions for all of  my clients.  You see, all of us need direction.  We all can use some assistance to further help continue us on our quests.  The foundation of Sanity Fitness System is the dedicated intention of bringing focus to one’s way, and improve their ability to enjoy every moment of their journey.

To me, fitness goes way beyond what we can see, or what we can touch.  A feeling of fitness is what you carry with you within every minute of everyday.  When coming upon your next direction, your approach will only be what you possess at that moment, no more and no less.  When most people bog themselves down, and carry to much, others pass through because they have learned that sanity exists between the small spaces of left, right, front, back, up and down.  An when the time comes, you simply fall into your place.

My Sanity

Albert Einstein defined insanity as, “Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”.  Even though we know this to be true, several continue to replay the same insane scenario over and over again.  When will it end?

I believe I have found an answer to that question.  Rather than looking at the, when will the insanity end, I suggest we focus on when sanity can begin.  You can spend several precious moments on worrying about what is wrong.  Or you can spend your moments on falling in to what can go right.

Just like insanity, sanity can also live all around you.  One of the reasons why most have only replayed the insanity version is because, in spite of wanting a different result, we are creatures of habit.  However, if you peel down toward the second level of a habit, you find that our habits can also be re-wired.  How so?  With movement.

You ever wonder where the phrase, “movement is medicine” came from?  What all that information boils down to is that although we are creatures of habit (mentally), our physical body can create the stimulus for our brains to re-wire a new habit.  That ability is something that no pill, machine, or late night infomercial can ever duplicate.  That is our own, and we can either use it or lose it.  So, where do we go from here?

I suggest you first recognize that you may be living in a world of insanity.  Next, you decide if the smile on your face is genuine or not.  Then decide to seek the direction to lead you toward finding your own sanity.  That process takes action.   Your action to continue to see through, what you first envisioned as a new you.    I am not here to give you your way because it is your way.  I am only here to point you in the right direction.

DONE WORK!

Time is made.

We all share one model commodity and that commodity is time. Twenty four hours is the make up of one day. What differs from one to the next is how the day gets spent. Something I have learned through fitness and what I am wanting to share with you is that time is not found, it is made. And through fitness, I learned how to produce more time.

First, a back story. When I started exercising years ago, I spent up to 3 hours a day in the gym. I, like a lot of people, felt that in order to achieve the results I was wanting, I had to spend a lot of my precious minutes in the gym to have it happen. What I discovered over the years was eventually that was not the case. The answers did not lie in the minutes spent on randomness, moreover, it was spent on specifics. And the specifics were the **Big Moves, that accomplished a lot more for the time spent doing them.

I realized I was spending 180 minutes a day, and only walking away with 10% of the health and fitness benefit. As you can see, not a very wise investment. When I later changed my focus, and spent 45 – 60 minutes on the big moves, I was walking away with 100% of a productive amount of time spent. Mostly because the exercises themselves require a focus and a plan, and in return, a stronger foundation to establish everything else above it.

What this means in the real world is that in order to be productive, one’s mental focus should first be spent on the frame (foundation) of what it is you are wanting to successfully achieve. And only then, spend the rest of the time filling in the created spaces on the necessary details.

So many people spend way to much time on the tiny details, when the focus should be on the model of how to spend the hour, and simply allow the minutes to play out in the direction they must go. In short, line them up and press play!

**Big Moves – Whole body exercises that demand an entire body to have attention. Aka: focus
For example: Squat, Deadlift, Pull-up, Overhead Press, Power Clean, Clean and Press, and Snatch
All the above exercises have regressions for a beginner to also enjoy launching their fitness success!

:) First, thank you. You are taking action and reading this post.  You obviously are searching for a new experience. Something different, and may we say, something more successful.  Your past approaches may have done their job in the past, however, that is the past.  And yes, you may want to use the same approach, but let’s recall the definition of insanity. Doing the same you over and over, and expecting a new outcome.  So let’s agree that now is a good time for a new approach. And this approach will be the one you use to always find a way back to a better you.   Agreed? ;)

Second, resilience: such positive beliefs include:

  • negative past events do not necessarily predict or determine the future
  • challenges or tragedies are not a constant part of life
  • setbacks are situations that people can overcome
  • setting goals and planning can help to achieve success
  • A resilient individual manages their stress largely by managing their beliefs. He or she views difficult circumstances as temporary, and the view that humans are capable of rising above adversity.

Third, an action for change: Our bodies have an incredible  opportunity to experience a success after a period of challenging conditions.  A reward is earned from the completion of a so called challenge.  And in this case, your reward is the awareness of a new you.  The you that can allow yourself to experience ALL of the end because you saw yourself to the end.

Now fast: Now that we are past our holiday season, we have in front of us a year of opportunities to adventure.  Your first reaction may be to grab as much as you can before you make your way into the trenches, when in reality, what is most needed is less than you may think.    Take the next 3 days (72 hours) and remove as much sugar and alcohol as you possibly can from your food intake.  And in place of it, slowly chew lean proteins, healthy fats, fibrous vegetables, and lot’s of water.

Why?: In abundance, alcohol and sugar are two calorie sources that, among other things, have a tremendous negative impact on your metabolism.  Or in other words, your body’s ability to break down and utilize calories.  I know I consumed both sources in excess over my holidays and now it’s time fore less.

Diet?: No, you are not on a diet.  You are simply allowing your body to do something it already knows how to do, however, rarely gets the chance to do it.  You are cleansing.  The human body has been around a lot longer than any cleanse available on the market.  We know what to do, and how to do it, and all we need to do is to see it through.

Now what?: After your 3 day cleanse you should take note on how you feel.  And really ask yourself that question.  You may need to add a fourth day to really squeeze out all those toxins.  And if you do, then I suggest you do it.  We now have an opportunity to solidify a new habit and that habit will be a new set point of tolerable toxins you allow in your body.  Congratulations, you are now more in tune (who here hates radio stations out of their frequency?…noisy!) and more aware of how good you want to feel.  Our next step is to maintain it which I will share in another post.  For now, see this through!

Fate follows fitness

Blue Ninja

Do you believe in fate?

They say fate  is the supposed force, power, or principle that predetermines events, as well as any inevitable events predestined by this force.  And if you believe in it, it is also said that your course is predetermined.

I am here to say that whether you believe in it or not, there is ‘stuff’ going on around you that may believe in fate.  And the ability to adapt yourself to a little, a lot, or all of this stuff takes a level of fitness you may not currently posses.

Without allowing yourself to fully take or make advantage of everything around you, you limit everything about you.  The key is to prepare you.  I am now telling you that a certain level of strength is required of us everyday.  And, there is another level of strength that is required to live in the unknown, the possibility.  The strength I am speaking of is your ability to seize, to adapt, and to conquer.

This level of strength is what I speak of when I speak of Sanity Strength.  It is the fitness between your mind and body and the strategy of knowing what to do with it.  Let’s call it your ninja skill.   You see we all of have a ninja living within us.  And whether you believe in fate or not, your ninja skill is the ability to be successful in either direction.

Follow the signs.

In an age of instant answers and instant gratification, we are raising a generation of youth that are told, ”The End before they ever step one foot past “In the beginning”.

Just because they can, all answers are not meant to be experienced instantly.  One of our biggest fears is our ego, and when ones’ ego is instantly fed, said ego never experiences a full moment of vulnerability.  Those moments are when leaders are made, voices are strengthened, and direction becomes solidified.

Time spent in new surroundings awakens our spirit.  It brings us back to life, back to present moments, and allows us the opportunity to find closure in one, before we begin another.

I suggest you do not rob yourself of this wonderful experience.  Not everything can be found on Google.  If you want it, put one foot in front of the other and grab your own sanity.  This present moment in time is your most valuable gift.   And may I also suggest, if you’re going to use it, do it with flavor.

My beautiful mom, Mona (1953 - 2007)

I am speaking to the young men who are up and coming amongst the ranks of middle school, high school and college.   I speak my words toward you to re-instill something I feel we have truly lost amongst the  many distractions of network television, video games, explicit suggestive musical lyrics, etc.  I can not turn my head away and continue to see the demise of what was once the backbone of how young boys continued to develop into the men that progressively changed history.

Young men do me a favor and look into the eyes of your mothers.  Those eyes you stare into represent the most unconditional love you will ever experience.  Those eyes will give you the light when it is dark and the answers when nothing seems possible.  Her ears are there to listen to your fears, without judgement or haste.  Her voice will speak deep into your soul, to remind you that you will always be loved.

I believe 2 Pac said it best:

“And since we all came from a woman  Got our name from a woman and our game from a woman

I wonder why we take from our women  Why we rape our women, do we hate our women?

I think it’s time to kill for our women Time to heal our women, be real to our women

And if we don’t we’ll have a race of babies  That will hate the ladies, that make the babies.

And since a man can’t make one  He has no right to tell a woman when and where to create one

So will the real men get upI know you’re fed up ladies, but keep your head up”

Tupac Shakur

Boys, respect your mothers and earn the true title of a REAL man.

What’s your sport?

Me?  I’m just a trainer.

A response I recently heard myself give, and after, angry because of it.   After several years spent perfecting a skill, I still have moments when I belittle the sport I love.  Later, I had myself sit down and rewrite exactly what it is I play out everyday, because if I don’t do my job, my fans can not do theirs.  This was what I came up with,

I have mastered the ability to assist my followers in becoming more:

a. productive and efficient, using a mix of movement patterns and lifestyle adaptations

b. resilient, using traditional training practices and innovative applications to fit the needs of today’s sports

c. methodical and focused, for  that ‘in the game’ strategy

and d. reflective, to further aid with future strategy and recovery.  AKA, THRIVE.

What all these simply mean is that I always stay ahead of the game, so to better lead the direction for those searching to improve theirs.  My career decision may have been an easy one, still, the work to get there has been exactly opposite.  I practice to consistently hold a focus toward productivity, to not over or under think, and to react accordingly, so to not lose sight of the steps used to move forward.  I may have started in this sport as a fat kid playing with fitness, and now, I am a professional trainer directing the plays that manufacture an opportunity to living inside of extraordinary.
Sanity, grab yours.

In a hundred years

How do you want to be remembered?

As far back as I can remember, I always knew I wanted to be remembered as amongst the best of the best.  I also was witty enough to recognize that it was not something that would come to me, rather, I needed to go after.  A right of passage if you will.  I’m not going to lie to you and say that I always had the drive to do it . I will say that I did take my time with things, and when the opportunity arrived,  I leaped in.  I want to be remembered as the man that learned to fall into the life he was born to love.

You see, I have been incredibly fortunate enough to have been given one life obstacle after another, after another, so that I truly recognized what it is I wanted to live for.  When you allow yourself to experience all  of the good and bad around you, you are allowing yourself to walk away with a mental sixth sense and the physical intuition to find yourself amongst the best of the best.  The greatest warrior’s have been sculpted into the images we see today not by adding more and more ‘stuff’, rather, through refinement from the journeys they have traveled.  Motion creates emotion, and your emotions are perfected the more you continue to face the challenges that lie ahead.  Do yourself a favor, MOVE!
